Theatre for Tots summer day camp at the Wood Theater was created in 2016 to provide a fun, unique and accessible educational experience based on theatre and performing arts. The program features activities in areas such as: Acting, Dance, Voice, Music, Movement, Costumes, Set Design & Building, Directing and more!
Children participate in one session, EITHER Morning OR Afternoon sessions. Each session is three hours long and offered during both weeks. We ask that your child stay in the same session during the program unless unexpected circumstances, doctor’s appointments or scheduling conflicts prevent this.
Can my child participate if they’ve come in previous years, or will the program be exactly the same?
Theatre for Tots is in its fourth year and has had an evolving curriculum since its first year. While similar topics may be covered from year to year, new topics will be introduced allowing your child to perfect old skills and learn brand new ones!
Our professionally trained instructors create this curriculum specifically for the Theatre for Tots program at the Wood Theater. Our head instructor, Erin Dove, uses the style of differentiated instruction to ensure that children of all ages and skill levels can successfully participate in the program. For example, children just participating in week two will not be confused or further behind than children that also participated in week one. Curriculum will be provided to parents before the program begins to make families aware of what their children are working on to encourage discussion on their work at the end of each day.
For the first two years, Theatre for Tots was open for children ages 5 to 9, all in one group. Many parents expressed that this age group was too wide, as four and five year olds are much different developmentally than nine year olds. The program’s age range is now 4 to 12, with three SEPARATE age groups. One group for age 4, 5 & 6, a second for ages 7, 8 & 9.
Groups will have their sessions in either the Cabaret Space or Rehearsal Room. The Cabaret Space is a large, open attachment to the Wood Theater right off of the main lobby. This space used to be a dance studio, and allows for movement and exploration in a safe environment. The upstairs rehearsal room is also a large, open space for creative exploration with both stairs and an elevator leading to it. Check in for both spaces will take place in the main lobby. Children will also get tours of and spend time in the entire theater, showing them all the highlights such as backstage, the dressing room, technical areas, etc.
Theatre for Tots is an inclusive program for children of all ability levels, be it physical, developmental, and emotional. We gladly welcome all children to the program and will work with them to make sure they have the best experience possible. If your child has any kind of special need (ex: physical limitation, learning disability, allergy/dietary restriction, etc) please let us know during registration or at the first day of the program so we can provide a safe environment for your child.
